Often termed as the ‘Venice of the East’, Udaipur has so much to brag about, from the iconic Palaces reflected in shimmering lakes to vintage hotels, no wonder it is crowned as one of the most romantic places in the world. 

The old city is surrounded on three sides by the crumbling city wall; the fourth side is Lake Pichola and the true heart of the city. Settled on its banks is a series of royal palaces with the famous Lake Palace on an island in the centre.

Monsoon Palace (Sajjan Garh)

Sitting atop a hill with a panoramic view of the city’s lakes, the palace was built to keep a watch over the monsoon clouds in the surrounding region and was equipped with an ingenious rainwater collection system, essential in the dry desert conditions of the region. There are incredible views of the structure at sunset and the palace is illuminated at night giving it an amazing appearance from the distance.

Fateh Sagar Lake

An artificial lake constructed by Maharana in 1678 and to the north-west of Udaipur. Within the confines of the Fateh Sagar Lake, there are three small islands.; the largest of these is called the Nehru Park, the second island houses a public park with an impressive water-jet fountain and the third island is the address for the Udaipur Solar Observatory.

The City Palace

The City Palace is clad with white marble and is the largest palace complex in Rajasthan. The complex is actually made up of a number of small and big palaces, museums and the gardens. The museum is worth visiting with its collections of mosaics, glasswork, mirror work, miniatures, and ornamental tiles. There is also an armoury section. The Fateh Prakash Palace Hotel has an amazing Crystal Gallery overlooking the Grand Durbar Hall with its massive chandeliers and portraits of former Maharajas. The complex provides a fine view of the lake and the Udaipur city from its upper terraces. There are other museums, a craft village and many shops selling a wide range of goods.

Boat tour on Lake Pichola*

An artificial fresh water lake, created in the year 1362 AD, its surroundings and islands within the lake have been developed over the centuries, with palaces, marble temples, family mansions, and bathing ghats. The famous Lake Palace (now converted into a heritage hotel) is located in the middle of the lake.

Bagore-Ki-Haveli Museum

This gracious 18th-century haveli, set on the water’s edge has been carefully restored into a folk museum, displaying costumes and modern art. In the evening, the haveli stages an enjoyable performance of the traditional dance and music of Rajasthan.
